e-Waste
E-waste is a serious problem in Australia.
According to the Environmental Protection and Heritage Council of Australia7, in the 2007/2008 financial year approximately 15.7 million computers reached end of life in Australia yet only 1.5 million of them were recycled.
It is believed that the remaining 14.2 million computers either ended up in landfill or stored somewhere for disposal at a later date.
That’s an enormous amount of e-waste not being looked after properly.
There is a massive lack of awareness about the toxicity of the materials used in producing IT equipment and you can’t simply throw out all of your computers with the rest of the office garbage.
If your company has made a commitment to reducing your carbon footprint then you’ll need to consider the environmental issues surrounding the disposal of your IT assets.
